Re: Depeche Mode
Tue, January 27, 2004 - 9:41 PMwhy does it have to be a stratified relationship? perhaps that says more about how you see relationships than it imparts any signifigant new insight into the way humans use technology, no? -

Re: Depeche Mode
Wed, January 28, 2004 - 1:52 AMhi pete. i know you already made it clear that you'll argue for the sake of arguing. but it seems like you have a lot of free time to look for buttons to push. i am merely posing a question to generate thought and dialogue. master and servant is a very basic concept. man and machine. there are so many directions it could go from there. if you want to just challenge me and disagree instead of contributing, why did you join this tribe? if you have such a revolutionary mind, i do wish you'd share it. so talk about why it isn't a stratified relationship.
anyone can be a critic.

Re: Depeche Mode
Wed, January 28, 2004 - 3:34 PMWhen is any relationship a binary? There is no such thing as binaries when involving humans and their emotions into the mix, even if those emotions are so much electrical impulses and chemical compounds. -

Re: Depeche Mode
Thu, January 29, 2004 - 2:31 PMit's like "nature" -- nature doesn't exist: it's a construced idea.
that technology masters us or we master technology is also an imposed frame of reference.

and with that slippery evasion, I'm off to the "Banana Oil" tribe! -

Re: Depeche Mode
Fri, January 30, 2004 - 1:52 AMwe talk about all these imposed definitions from a position of choice. we have that luxury to accept or reject information because we have access to it. and since we are talking about technology in relation to spiritual development, will there be a gap in consiousness based on economics? inner city kids talking about their psychic energy? technoshamanism? robotics? you can develop completely off the grid and not have interference, on the grid- like us, or surrounded by it with little or no access. what is our responsibility then?

Re: Depeche Mode
Sat, January 31, 2004 - 11:22 AMI think the most important point here is choice. I grew up surrounded by technology in part but we also had another life where we had to actually get our drinking water from the river and carry it a long way in wooden buckets. I actually think that being exposed to both gives you a good perspective. When we become overly dependent on technology we have become the servants. If we are able to completely detach from it then we are the master because it gives us the power to use it (hopefully) wisely. And yes Solar - technology is a huge responsibility which is evident in global warming etc.

Re: Depeche Mode
Thu, January 29, 2004 - 5:26 PMinteresting question, solar.3
i think it must be both, as one cannot exist without the other. in a relationship of knowing, they must co-exist as the same coin.
one cannot know dark without ever seeing the light.
another thought arises from this question: did we invent the microcomputer, or did the microcomputer consciously evolve itself through our existence...?
that is, if you believe *everything* is conscious at some level. food for thought at least.

Re: Depeche Mode
Tue, February 10, 2004 - 8:43 PMI'd say both.
Technology is, by definition, something created by people, generally to serve them. Basic tools, agriculture, the internal combustion engine, the telephone, the internet are all human inventions to serve some purpose. These technologies become wide-spread because they are useful and popular and people like them.
And they eventually grow and become institutions. Money started as a technology, a way to abstract out value and make transactions easier. Then it became a given part of life. Then people started living their lives to just amass money. The invention became so interwoven with society that people became dependent on it. The servent essentially becomes the master.
But it's all just a frame of mind, no? I think it's important to recognize technology as a valuable tool which can gain us a lot, but don't forget it's just a tool. Don't build your life around tools.
Thanks for asking!

Re: Depeche Mode
Mon, March 29, 2004 - 4:07 AMI think that this is a question of balance. nothing is absolute, or binary... its always teetering and tottering between two points. Its cyclical.
Plus!, might i add... the DM lyric is "master and servant", not master or servant. "Its a lot like life"
Every new piece of technology is our baby. We nurture it and put it out into the world. but after a while it grows up and starts to have a life of its own. the older technology gets, and (more importantly) the more prevelant it gets = the more control it starts to have over us. but that's ok because we keep making new and better babies that make us not need our old masters anymore. :) -

Mon, March 29, 2004 - 10:12 AMron, let's face it... turntables are a thing of the past. haven't you heard of digital audio!?
now all us synthesizer fanatics have to worry about is synthesizers breaking off from the rest of the instruments to go hang with drum machines. fx machines can come too. the end!

Re: Depeche Mode
Mon, March 29, 2004 - 10:15 AMbtw, software is going to fuck this all up. you can't have software just hanging out and aging. it sort of dies with the OS, so after 5 or 6 years you're screwed.
sure, some people are still using opcode vision, and norman is chillin with his atari 1040 (did he recently upgrade?), but everyone else is running xp or osx and the software of two years ago is dead... not that it was very good to begin with. now however, now things are good. i mean who would use reaktor 3 when reaktor 5 is almost out (whoops, spilling beans).

Re: Depeche Mode
Tue, March 30, 2004 - 6:25 AMDepeche mode?
Master and Servant!
You stand corrected
I want you not sprawled across the floor
Not crawling on all fours
Perhaps barefoot upon your back
Simply begging for it more
Up against the wall!
Your toes touch nothing at all
Your mind alight with fire
Your spirit's pride and might aquired
Serving none forever more
For along with power come the rules
With service just demand
With obligation's found nobility
The servant's master plan
